Description The Adélie Land is a narrow strip of the Antarctic, situated between at a latitude about 67° south and the South pole, and at longitude 136° 11’ et 142° 02’ east. The Adélie Land covers an area of about 432,000 km2. It is a part of the five districts of the austral and antarctic French lands. It provides a base for the scientific bases of Dumont-d'Urville, on the Pétrels island, and Commandant-Charcot. Its climate is characterized by very low temperatures and strong winds, often with ice particles, the "blizzards". The average temperatures at Dumont d'Urville, at sea level, are about -1 to +7°C, during the summer (january, february) and about -15 to -20°C during the austral winter (july, august). From the month of March, the sea is covered by a thin layer of ice, which thickens to reach one or two meters during the austral winter. This sea ice which is the ice floe covers a wide area and blocks the sailing. The return of the summer leads to the breaking up of this ice which splits up in patches drifting away. |
